You built a website. Or you have a Facebook page. But when someone in Harare or Bulawayo searches for what you sell, do you show up? More people are searching than ever. If you are not showing up, you are losing sales you never even knew about.
Zimbabwe just crossed a line
POTRAZ, the group that tracks Zimbabwe's phones and internet, released new numbers. Internet penetration hit 84.55% in the last quarter of 2025, up from 82.87% the quarter before.
Even wilder, there are now 16.78 million active mobile lines in the country. That is more SIM cards than people.
Data use is climbing fast too. Mobile data traffic jumped 11.27% in one quarter alone. Satellite connections are growing fast as well, and Starlink is a big reason why.
Here is what this means for you. The pool of people searching online for a plumber, a salon, a hardware shop, a caterer, just got bigger. Again. If your business is not set up to be found, you are missing out on customers who did not exist for you a year ago.
What actually gets you found
Most small business owners think a website is enough. It is not. You need to show up when someone searches.
The single biggest free tool for this is Google Business Profile. This is the free listing that shows your shop on Google Maps and in search results, with your hours, number, and reviews.
Many Zimbabwean businesses have never claimed theirs. That means when someone searches "hardware shop near me" in Mutare, a competitor who bothered to claim their listing wins, even if their shop is worse than yours.
Page titles matter too. A page title is just the words that show up as the blue link in Google search results. If yours just says "Home" instead of "Best Bakery in Bulawayo, Fresh Bread Daily", you are throwing away free advertising.
Three things to fix this week
You do not need a developer or a big budget for this. You need thirty minutes.
- Claim your Google Business Profile. Search your business name on Google. If you see "Own this business?", click it and verify. If nothing comes up, create a new listing at google.com/business.
- Make sure your name, address and phone number are exactly the same on Google, Facebook and WhatsApp Business. Even small differences, like "Ave" versus "Avenue", confuse Google and hurt your ranking.
- Rewrite your website's page titles so they say what you do and where you are, not just "Home" or "Welcome".
More people are searching. The only question is whether they find you or your competitor.
This is not a scary story
This is not a warning about rising data costs or slow connections. It is the opposite. Zimbabweans are coming online faster than before, with more ways to connect, including Starlink.
The tide is coming in. The only question is whether your boat is afloat.
A business that spends thirty minutes claiming its Google listing this week will be found by more people next month, for free.
