Almost No African Business Has a Real Website. That's Your Opening.

Most small businesses in Africa still have no proper website. Here is what that costs them, and how you can get online the right way without wasting money.

You know you should have a website. You keep putting it off.

Maybe you think it costs too much. Maybe you think your customers find you fine on WhatsApp. Maybe you just don't know where to start.

Here's the thing. Almost nobody else in your industry has one either. That's not a reason to relax. That's your opening.

Why does this matter so much?

Small businesses are the backbone of Africa. They make up over 90% of all businesses and up to 80% of jobs on the continent, according to the 2026 Visibility Report for African SMEs.

But only 1.8% of them have basic online assets like a proper website. That means almost every business you compete with is invisible online.

Think about a tailor in Lagos, a salon in Nairobi, or a hardware shop in Harare. If that shop has no website and no Google listing, a customer searching nearby will never see it. They will see the one shop that does.

That's not bad luck. A customer can only choose from what they can see. If you're not there, you're not in the running.

What is it actually costing you?

Picture two spaza shops on the same street. One has a Google listing with hours, photos, and a phone number. The other has nothing online.

A new customer searches "shop near me" on their phone. They see one result. They walk to that one.

The report also found that fewer than 15% of African SMEs put any budget at all toward getting seen. The report says well-run PR campaigns can pay back three to six times what they cost.

You don't need a big budget. You need to be one of the few who show up at all.

If almost nobody in your industry is online, being the one who is becomes your biggest advantage.

How do you get started without wasting money?

You don't need a fancy site on day one. You need to be findable and trustworthy. Start small, in this order.

  1. Claim your free Google Business listing with your name, hours, and phone number.
  2. Add real photos of your shop, your products, or your work.
  3. Get a simple one page website with what you sell and how to reach you.
  4. Add your WhatsApp number so people can message you directly.
  5. Ask happy customers to leave a review.

Language matters too. Write your listing the way your customers actually talk, in English, Shona, Ndebele or whatever they use.
