Your customers are looking for you. Right now. On Google, on WhatsApp, on Facebook. They're typing your shop name or what you sell into their phone. And if you're not showing up, they're buying from someone else instead.
This is not a nice-to-have anymore. Being online is how businesses get found.
Why being invisible costs you real money
Let's say you own a plumbing business in Harare. A family's toilet breaks at 10am on a Tuesday. The wife pulls out her phone. She types "plumber near me" into Google.
If you're there, you get the job. If you're not, the person below you does.
This happens millions of times every week in Zimbabwe. People searching for exactly what you offer. Hairdressers. Electricians. Restaurants. Tutors. Builders. They're all getting found or staying hidden based on one thing: whether they showed up in a search.
When you're not online, you don't just lose that one customer. You lose the word-of-mouth they would have told their friends. You lose the repeat business they would have brought back. And you lose the chance to be the first one they think of next time.
What "being online" actually means
You do not need a fancy website that costs money you don't have. Being online starts simple.
A Google Business Profile is free. It takes 30 minutes. You add your shop name, location, phone number, photos of your work, and your hours. When someone searches for your type of business near them, you show up. That's it.
Then, if you want to go further, you add a simple website. This is a single page that says who you are, what you do, and how people can reach you. It does not need animations or complicated design. It needs to load fast on a phone and answer one question: should I call this person or not.
Many Zimbabwean businesses are already doing this and getting ahead because most businesses are not. This is your opening.
How to start without wasting money
You don't need to hire an expensive agency or buy software you'll never use. Start here:
- Create a free Google Business Profile. Go to google.com/business. Add your details, photos, and hours. This is your first move.
- Ask your customers for reviews on that Google profile. Reviews build trust. Respond to them, even the tough ones.
- Get a simple website built or use a free template on Google Sites or Wix. Write it yourself. Show your best work. Add a phone number and email address.
- Ask yourself: if someone calls, can I pick up? If you can't, use a messaging app like WhatsApp so people can reach you on their schedule.
Start with step one. You will see results from that alone.
Most Zimbabwean business owners know they need this. They just haven't done it yet because it feels too hard or too expensive. It is not. You have the tools. You have the customers looking.
If you build something bigger later and want a custom website or help automating your customer messages, Eka can help with that.
